The CSU Dominguez Hills Master of Social Work Program provides its students with a unique theory-backed approach to social work practice. At CSUDH, all MSW coursework intends to educate nascent social work practitioners about the role of identity and its use in the social construction of power and privilege in the United States of America regardless of specialization (CMH, CYF, or CCB). Informed by the teachings of Critical Race Theory, a scholarly approach to race, racism and power (Delgado, 2000) and Intersectionality (see Crenshaw, 1994; Miller and Garran, 2017), the CSUDH curriculum teaches students about the role of group privilege, the importance of recognizing gaps in said privilege in order to create inclusive systems change rather than an adherence to homogeneity, and use of critical race strategy to combat the perpetuation of power structures that have impeded the growth of many “–Americans” for generations (i.e.: fostering communities of belonging through counter-narrative storytelling, political strategy and use of interest convergence, etc.). That said, using a CRT/I-informed approach when researching and/or analyzing systems at all levels (micro, mezzo, macro) is key to elucidating counterproductive systems of oppression while educating practitioners towards positive change.
